Field Bean Seeds – ‘Wizard’ – 250gms
Field Bean seeds planted as a green manure crop are helpful for soils through the deep rooting of the beans and in suppressing weeds through crop competition.
Winter Field Beans belong to the plants known as Legumes and are ideal seeds for a Green Manure crop.
Legumes are plants able to ‘fix’ Nitrogen from the atmosphere through a process involving the plants roots and a natural rhizobium bacteria. This Nitrogen is then released back into the soil when the field beans are dug back into the ground providing a valuable source of natural plant food for the next crop.
The field beans can be sown from September to December, for overwintering, at the rate of 18-25 seeds per square metre. The beans can also be sown in the spring but should be sown a higher seed rate of 40 seeds per square metre.
Dig the whole field bean plants into the soil in early spring before the onset of flowering. If the field bean plants get too tall just cut them down and dig in the whole plant.
If the beans are left to flower they are very important for bees and other pollinating insects which benefit the environment.
