Field Bean Seeds – ‘Wizard’ – 100gms
Field Bean seeds planted as a green manure crop is helpful for soils through the deep rooting of the beans and in suppressing weeds through crop competition.
Legumes are plants able to ‘fix’ Nitrogen from the atmosphere through a process involving the plants roots and a natural rhizobium bacteria. This Nitrogen is then released back into the soil when the field beans are dug back into the ground providing a valuable source of natural plant food for the next crop.
Field beans are particularly useful for breaking up heavy clay soils with their deep rooting. In addition, by planting a green manure crop the weeds are suppressed through crop competition producing a cleaner seed bed in the spring.
The field beans can be sown from September to December, for overwintering, at the rate of 18-25 seeds per square metre. The beans can also be sown in the spring but should be sown a higher seed rate of 40 seeds per square metre.
Dig the whole field bean plants into the soil in early spring before the onset of flowering. If the field bean plants get too tall just cut them down and dig in the whole plant.
If the beans are left to flower they are very important for bees and other pollinating insects which benefit the environment.
