Description
Vetches/Winter Tares
Vetches/Winter Tares are a leguminous plant which ‘fix’ Nitrogen providing a valuable source of natural plant food for the next crop. Incorporate the plants into the soil before seed sets. The Vetch plants will break down releasing the nutrients back into the soil.
Soil Types
Vetches prefer loams and clay soils but can be grown on all most soil types. Soils prone to waterlogging and a low pH should be avoided as this inhibits germination.
Sowing
Sow the seeds by broadcasting onto dug or prepared soil then cover at least 1cm (1/2″ deep). Sow at a rate of 5 – 7gm/sq metre either in the Spring (March to May) or Autumn (August to early October).
